Preparing for a New Year

New Year's Eve preparations have begun in earnest. Tomorrow I have a waxing appointment as well as a manicure appointment. Those are just regularly scheduled appointments, not prep for the New Year but they do tie in with the theme of New Year and things I like.

The European Waxing Center on Jericho Turnpike in East Northport is one of my new favorite places for waxing services. They have a pristine facility, very accomplished personnel and reasonably priced services. I highly recommend them.

For my manicure, I have gotten gel wraps for the last few years which despite the assurances of my nail technician, have turned my nails into tissue paper. I don't need long nails, I just want color on my nails. ManiQ seems to be just the right nail treatment for me. It's a gel treatment wherein the nail color really truly does last for two full weeks. My nail salon guarantees it. It's $25 per treatment. CND has a similar product but with a limited color palette and a higher per treatment price. ManiQ has a very varied color palette. So I'm a fan of ManiQ.

I tried to get a haircut but my guy, Tony, was fully booked for tomorrow. I've scheduled an appointment for next week with no time pressure, no constraints.

I think we overschedule ourselves sometimes putting pressure on ourselves and on our service providers. The time we allow for ourselves should be enjoyed, not rushed, not stressed over. Enjoyed.

So happy New Year's Eve, everyone. Whether your prep time is regularly scheduled or for New Year's, please take the time to enjoy it, savor it, bask in it. You are worth it.

How to Follow Just Mary It

I've had a few questions from friends on how to follow my blog. I don't know everything on the subject ( I know, Steph, you're shocked!) but I think it goes like so:

Just click on the Follow icon on the right hand side of the page, towards the top. With that icon, you can follow me using your Gmail account.

At the top of the page, you'll see links for Follow - Share - Report Abuse. Just click the word Follow and you will be asked to select which account you would like to use in order to sign in. You can follow me if you have a Yahoo account, Gmail account, Twitter account, AIM account or you can sign up for a new Gmail account on that page as well. You must be signed in to follow me using a valid email account and that will also allow you to comment on my pithy posts.

So sign up for a Gmail account. It's easy. Just go to gmail.com and you'll see "Sign in with your gmail account" on the right hand side of the screen and just below that "New to gmail? Create an account."

If you have any questions or need some help, my special followers, you have my numbers. Just Mary It ;)

Dirt

Those of you who know me are well aware of my love of all things cleaning. I love new cleaning gadgets. I especially love new cleaning products.

I am a baseball mom of two baseball kids who play on four baseball teams during the spring season. They play in Half Hollow Hills Little League on some of the most spectacular baseball fields on Long Island, perhaps all of New York State, in Otsego Park.

I know it sounds like I'm digressing but I'm not. Cleaning products and baseball are eternally interwined in my home, especially in the laundry room.

I love everything about Otsego Park except for the red dirt. Steve Muraco is the president of Half Hollow Hills Little League and he's a great man in my book except for the fact that he LOVES white baseball pants. Otsego Red Dirt + HHHLL White Baseball Pants = a crazed mom trying to get stains out of the baseball pants to no avail.

That was until last summer when my buddy Becky flippantly said what's the big deal, just use this stuff I use, SA8, as she tossed the whole team a bottle. And she was pretty much on the money. You squeezed it on the stains. Threw the article of clothing into the washing machine and let Maytag (or whomever your particular laundry god is) do its thing. It worked. It took the damnable red stains out of the hated white pants. So I used it all summer and life was good. I even posted before & after photos of my son's white baseball pants. I was elected to do wash all the baseball pants for the team, an honor I cherished but declined.

And then disaster struck. Amway stopped producing my beloved SA8 and came out with some environmentally friendly version of the product that just did not work. I was heartbroken.

I emailed the company and found I was in fine company with a lot of other heartbroken people who wanted the old product back.

It's been a long road to the point of today's blog. Amway has come out with an aerosol can version of the old SA8. I received my first shipment in early December and I plan on hoarding as much of the product as I can in case Amway ever decides to play with my emotions and my psyche ever again.

Buy Classic Laundry Prewash Spray Spot Treatment for your problematic laundry issues. It's $8.99/can and it will save your mental health when it comes to laundry. You can thank me later :)

Beating Your Children

Don't take the title literally...I don't beat my children. But I did beat my son at Finger Football tonight. I came, I played, I read the rules, I let him slide and I still kicked his ass.

Finger Football was one of Joe's Christmas presents and he set the game up so we could play. He's kind of a ham-fisted kid right now as he's only 10 and he's a boy. You moms out there with 10 year old sons will know exactly what I mean. Finger football is played with a roll up field, markers for downs, a football in the shape of a plastic round form with a ball bearing in it and a foam football in which to score field goals. Finger football is played just like real football as in the same rules.

I have better dexterity than my son as well as fine motor skills which results in more touchdowns and a seemingly magic touch when it comes to throwing dice. All of this results in a very frustrated son because he's losing and I'm winning. I finally had to call a halt to the game because he was being a sore loser.

There are those who would say adults should let kids win. Or you should reward the mere fact that a kid participates in an activity. I am not of that opinion or school of thought. I played by the rules and even let him slide a little on questionable touchdowns. But I draw the line letting him continue to play when he's being a bad sport. It's a life lesson in the form of Finger Football.

By the way, the score was 32-18 at the end of play. Just saying....

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, everyone! I am writing this post on my new Mac Book Pro. I've been a life long PC user and overall gadget lover so I'm torn....do I stick with my PC or go all out Mac?  I think I'll have to take some time to mull this one over.

UPDATE: Not totally switching over. Just lost some writing because I tried to use a copy command from PC on my Mac. So doesn't work.

Now I have to get outside and bring some firewood in. The blizzard has begun!

Everything Old Is New Again

I've just watched Denis Leary's appearance on the Letterman Show where he fondly ( I think ) recalls the Christmas when he received the toy version of the rifle that the Rifleman carried (Lucas McCain played by Chuck Connors) until Denis shot his sister in the eye with one of the plastic bullets and had the rifle confiscated by his parents on Christmas Day.

One of my best Christmas presents in the last few years was a gift from my husband. What did he get me, you ask??? He got me an EZ Bake oven, a gift I had always wanted as a little girl but had never gotten....and it was an original. I still haven't used it but I love that gift. He mentally bookmarked that I never had an EZ Bake oven and as he is wont to do, he fulfilled a wish for me.

Listen to childhood stories. You might just come up with a very cool gift idea. I highly recommend it.

Jill's Steals and Deals

The Today Show has been running a great shopping segment for the holidays called Jill's Steals and Deals. Retailers offer special discounts to Today Show viewers at significantly discounted prices. The discounts are only available for 24 hours so get on the retailer website quickly if you want one of the items. Not sure if it's ending with Christmas coming this Saturday, but I'll check back and update.

The shopping deals being offered are not just for the female shopper. I loved the Plantronic in-car speakerphone  retailing for $79.99. Today Show special price: $20! Unbelievable price. You know I got one because I hate the quality of the speakerphone in my LandRover. But I digress....

Why I Called My Blog "Just Mary It"

I've had many friends, mostly girlfriends, ask me to write a blog where I post stuff I know. It's that simple. The title of my blog comes my friends, Becky and Stephanie, who tell me that if they want to know something, they just ask me, hence just Mary it. I'm their personal version of Google.

I do have a deep fount of seemingly useless information in my head which at times becomes useful to someone. I hope at some point you find something useful here. Enjoy!
